Sandra Paulsen’s Books on Early Trauma Protocol and Dissociation

These are the stuff! Chances are if you are reading this you are an EMDR trained therapist looking for more info on using the Early Trauma Protocol (ETP) of EMDR or further training on working with dissociation. If that is the case I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking the Dr. Sandra Paulsen trainings available via Steven Frankel Group. Also take a sec to google if Katie O’Shea is having any trainings you can attend.

I DO NOT feel that reading these books is enough for a clinician to move into treatment. Further training and consultation is the way to go.

Neither of these books are particularly long or difficult. Both include lots of research, Sandra Paulsen cartoons (great for understanding from a right brain or young part perspective), and clinical info. Good news…. They are not expensive either!

First try When There Are No Words: Repairing Early Trauma and Neglect From the Attachment Period With EMDR Therapy This text includes info on Panksepp’s neural affective circuits, Schore, and Polyvagal Theory. There is also an intro to Somatic Therapy interventions-which is more in depth in Dr Paulsen’s training.

After you have digested the above dive into Looking Through the Eyes of Trauma and Dissociation: An illustrated guide for EMDR therapists and clients This one has a ton of cartoons and illustrations. Right there in the title Dr. Paulsen says it is for clients. The only reason I have recommended these books to clients is if they has a lot of speculation, questions (hello protective parts) or are in a support role for a client. If you recommend these books to a client please read them also; else they will likely know more about dissociation than you. Not cool.

Reach out with questions/consultation. This is wonderful and complex stuff.
