Counseling during Coronavirus Quarantine (COVID-19)

Can I get therapy during the Coronavirus Lockdown?

During the COVID-19 quarantine many people have sound themselves seeking therapy, perhaps for the first time.  Here’s what you need to know about counseling during coronavirus quarantine.

  • Most likely it will be online. There are many online HIPPA complaint platforms for therapists to choose from. You may be required to download an app. HIPPA regulations related to online therapy were waived during the pandemic but privacy and safety as still important!
  • Before selecting an online therapist you may consider if you would like the see your therapist in person after quarantine is lifted and pick some geographically close to you.
  • Rules are quickly changing with insurance and telehealth. In California (where I am located) there is a “parsimony” law stating insurance must treat online therapy the same as in person. Reach out to your insurance company for more details on your particular plan and location.
  • Counseling can be hard! Therapists plan your treatment off your self report. So it is REALLY important you are honest with your therapist about your symptoms and the severity you are suffering. Therapists strive to do no harm and knowing how to treat the client comes from this honesty and teamwork.
  • Often therapy is about healing the past in order to lessen symptoms in the present. With online therapy and the current Coronavirus concerns you and your therapist may chose to work on current symptoms reduction instead of exploring the past in any detail. That can come later 😊
  • If you are experiencing thoughts of hurting yourself reach out for help. There is a myriad of online resources or you can call 911 in the US for help. They will know what to do in an emergency
  • Not sure where to start looking for services? In the US you can call 211 to be linked to social services in your area. This includes everything from food banks to mental health options.

Please take care of yourself and reach out for help if it is needed. Stay safe; physically, mentally, emotionally
